Our Path
When Jon & I got married in our early twenties, we thought we had a pretty clear vision of what our futures held. We were excited to start a family, Jon was working on a dairy farm, and I was doing office work. It was a natural decision for us to put down roots in Abbotsford, BC.

Let's fast-forward our story to 12 years down the road. While no longer farming, we were still living in the same town, and were raising four beautiful kids. Jon and I were relaxing one evening, and he sent me a screenshot of a volunteer Farm Manager position in Africa, with Seeds of Hope Children's Ministry. I've never been the spontaneous type, but I didn't hesitate when I responded I'd be all in if he was! Five months later we were living in Zambia, and thus began our first experience in Africa.

Seeds of Hope is an remarkable organization. We felt fulfilled, and we really flourished in our work. Our stay in Zambia was nothing short of life changing. Our eyes were opened in ways that they never could have been without experiencing it first hand. It was incredible learning a culture that is quite different from what we grew up with. It was filled with many lessons! Lessons on gratitude for all God has provided and has done in our own lives. Lessons in showing kindness. Lessons in the importance of being a listening ear, and lessons on showing others that their lives are important.

Our year was up in no time, and we returned to Canada changed. We won't try to gloss over that re-entry back. It was hard. Jon resumed his sales job, the kids went back to regular school, and I was a stay-at-home mom with no kids at home during the day. I felt completely lost. I began to pray that God show me what my purpose was back in Canada. I can't count the number of times I pleaded "Speak Lord! Your servant is listening." (1 Samuel 3:10).
Jon and I returned to Zambia, with my dad, in November of 2023. That trip really confirmed that both of us were missing the depth of purpose that came from working with vulnerable children. Through a series of "coincidental" meet ups and conversations, we returned home feeling more sure than ever that God was starting to crack open doors for a another big change in our lives.

We had the honour and privilege of meeting and spending time with Jamie and Kathy Flowers, previous directors of Living Hope International, while we lived in Zambia. Tragically, the Lord called Jamie from his earthly life, and Kathy had to make the hard call to move back to the United States with her children. These heartbreaking events led to the vacancy and need for "feet on the ground" at Living Hope. Jon & I, along with our kids, will be stepping in to that position!

Our role will not be to take charge and make big changes. Living Hope has a great group of Zambian staff. We anticipate working alongside them, learning, mentoring. growing and guiding, all while respecting their culture. We couldn't be more excited to experience spiritual and personal growth as a family unit!

Some might say we are crazy to leave the stability and predictability of life here in Canada. Some might say we are foolish to leave a beloved career, and a steady income. Some might question if we have considered all the what-ifs and the could-be's. But we are confident this has been carefully planned by our Heavenly Potter. We walk forward in full confidence that He is walking with us with each step. His love knows no borders.
But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40:31.
